Hurling is an outdoor team sport of ancient Gaelic origin and played with sticks and a ball. The game, played primarily in Ireland, is arguably the world's fastest field team sport in terms of game play and is Ireland's national sport. We're currently looking for people that are interested in playing the great game of hurling.

2013 NACB Gaelic Games Recap!

E-mail Print PDF

It was a great weekend to be a Hurler! Nationals were in Cleveland this year and I couldn't be prouder of both the men and women of this fine club! Akron were runners up this year in the shield and the Ladies made us proud with their win against Denver! Here's a recap of all the action!

Akron Celtic Guards Men's Team

Friday August 30, 2013 - Finals Tournament

Akron v. Indianapolis - Loss: 0-6 to 1-13. Akron fought hard but lost to Indianapolis to end their finals run early. Though disappointing, the effort showed from the boys was exceptional and was personally one of the best performances in my short career with the club. Indy is a great club and a powerful force in Hurling, and though we lost, we had no reason to hang our heads in defeat.

Saturday August 31, 2013 - Day Off

Sunday September 1, 2013 - Shield Tournament

Akron v. Seattle - Win: 3-9 to 1-2. Akron played Seattle in the first round of the shield for the third time. Akron played really well as a team and was able to show our full potential on the pitch. Seattle is a great club and we are proud to play them every year. The game was made very special when 87 year old Al O'Leary made an appearence for the Guard in goal to help us end the game with a victory! Al's performance was incredible not allowing any points or goals with his time in net. Certainly Man of the Match! This win propelled Akron to the Semi-finals against Southeast.

Akron v. Southeast - Win: Akron beat Southeast in a game that put Akron against players from the Carolinas, Michigan, and Orlando. Akron advanced in this hard fought game which saw Akron seek revenge from the defeat suffered last year against the same team in the first round. This win took Akron the the finals of the Junior C Shield for the first time since 2010.

Akron v. Allentown - Loss: 3-6 to 4-9. Akron lost the finals match against a very good Allentown team. The match saw Akron down only 4 at halftime and was fought hard til the very end. Though the loss was difficult, the drive the team had, with the support of the friends, family, and fans that stayed the whole day was incredible! I would also like to thank Allentown for being very sportsmanlike in their victory. Congrats to Allentown!

St. Louis Camogie (with Akron Celtic Guards Camogie)

Friday August 30, 2013 - Day Off

Saturday August 31, 2013 - Finals Tournament

St. Louis v. Denver - Win: 2-3 to 2-1.St. Louis won against Denver in a very exciting match bright and early Saturday morning! St. Louis had lost to Denver at Nationals last year and fought hard to pull out a victory by 2 points! In this highly attended match, St. Louis won the game with fantastic work put in by our Akron Camogie Girls! Akron's own Coleen Casey had two points which proved to be the deciding factor. The Akron Men's team in attendance could not have been prouder of this performance!

St. Louis v. Indianapolis - Loss: 1-2 to 11-8. In a hard loss, St. Louis ended their finals run with a loss to a very talented Indinapolis team. Much like the men's teams, Indy has grown their Camogie team to be an exceptional force in the GAA. Indy ended up winning the Junior Camogie finals. Congrats to Indy Camogie!

What a weekend! A major thanks to a few different people. First, thanks to all the family and friends who came and supported both our teams! Many of you came multiple days and your continued support, enthusiasm, and help is always extremely appreciated. You help us stay focused, confident, and most importantly relaxed by your presence and encouragement. A special thank you to both Steve Hohman and Jamison Blose (seen in the black jerseys on the top picture) for their work as "water men", their role in substitution and game planning, and encouragement throughout the weekend. We're sorry you both weren't 100% this year and can't wait for you to join us again on the pitch! We'd like to once again thank St. Louis for joining forces with Akron, Pittsburgh, and Tennessee to make a collaborative girls team which is a force in Junior Camogie! Our girls love you ladies and appreciate the work done to make this great team happen! Lastly, a big thank you to Al O'Leary. You have been instrumental to the development of our club, and your passion and enthusiasm, at 87 no less, is nothing short of inspirational. We also appreciate you filling in at goal when we needed you!
